Top tips for a successful head shot photo session!        For women

  1. Bring a few more garments than you think you will need. Your session includes 3 wardrobe changes. Possible options are business, business casual and casual.
  2. Try on your clothing in advance to be sure it’s a good fit. Clothing looks nicer if pressed and brought on hangers.
  3. For a slimmer look, form fitting is definitely best! Look for figure hugging clothes. Blousy or boxy tops will make you look wider on camera. Add a suit jacket for a more professional look.
  4. Textures like lace and ruffles add visual interest. Look for textured tops in solid colors or small prints. Avoid large patterns as they may detract from your face.
  5. Bring a variety of colors. Recommended are light like ivory, white, or pastel and dark colors like black, charcoal gray, navy, and something with a pop of color that brings out your eyes. Our studio offers a limited variety of clothing.
  6. For casual poses, bring something to personalize your session like sportswear, a hat, a denim jacket or your favorite sweater or coffee mug.
  7. Consider longer sleeves. 3/4 length and long sleeves are universally flattering and slimming. Sleeveless is great on toned arms or paired with layers (see above) to slim arms. Avoid cap sleeves.
  8. Bring coordinating bottoms. Many shots are 3/4 length (knees up). Bring pants or skirts that match your favorite tops, that way if your knee or hip is in the frame, you’ll be stylishly covered.
  9. No need to bring shoes as we won’t be photographing full length.
  10. Look for flattering necklines. Scoop, cowl neck, or V-neck are great options. Avoid high neck tops as they may make your neck look cut off in photographs.
  11. Select jewelry that speaks to your style. Subtle? Or bold? You choose, but not too shiny.
  12. Come with clean, manicured nails. Hands come into frame with headshots, so natural colors, simple buff, or French manicures are suggested.
  13. Please avoid moisturizer and sunscreen the day of your session.
  14. Don’t get a haircut the day before, a cut that is about two weeks old gives a softer look.
  15. If possible please avoid wearing glasses, the light reflected off the lenses will show in the photograph, unless you have non-glare lenses. Retouching is available.
